Is Anger Getting in the Way?

Is Anger Getting in the Way?

Many years ago I decided to try therapy because I was dealing with depression due to the break-up of a long-term relationship. My therapist having known that I felt down for an extended period said “you may feel depressed, but chances are you’re just really angry.” She went on to explain that depression and anger are closely tied together. Although depression can be a clinical diagnosis that requires professional care, it may also be caused by unexpressed anger or resentment towards somebody or something.

She was right, I had been building up resentment towards life for shattering my dreams, killing the storybook ending, and putting out my fire. I had let it build up with no way of expressing it or letting it out which led to a deep emotional pain.

I have since learned that there are healthy ways to express anger so that it doesn’t stew or lead to ongoing feelings of paralysis.

We all have troubling times and our emotions may range from discouragement to depression, or from frustration to feeling so angry that we lash out at those we love or get physically violent.

If you’ve been consistent with your spiritual practice, chances are these episodes will happen less or perhaps not as intense as they once were. But the truth is, life can be a rollercoaster and we have no choice but to go on the ride. It is how we deal with and sit through that ride that creates our life experience.

Studies have shown that ongoing, unresolved anger may lead to certain diseases such as heart attack, stroke, or cancer. There is a powerful link between stressful emotions and our physical health. But the good news is that it’s not too late to do something proactive especially if you’ve been dealing with *extreme anxiety, depression, or anger.

Sometimes when we’re in this state, we don’t feel like doing anything at all. But if you can muster up the energy, here are some helpful actions that you can take to go deeper and uncover these heavy emotions once and for all. When we can gain an understanding and become conscious of their existence, we come to realize that underneath all of it is our natural state of joy, bliss, relaxation, balance, unconditional love, and gratitude.

Exercise – One of the best ways to expel anger is to push yourself through an exercise routine. Running or cardio training is particularly effective at clearing the mind and eliminating negative self-talk. Exercise of any type releases feel-good endorphins and helps us to feel better.

Punch a Pillow – Sometimes anger needs to be expressed and we don’t always have an outlet. The best way to let out the built up tension is by punching a pillow over and over again while screaming at the top of your lungs. What may seem extreme at first, you’ll find will dissipate the anger leaving you feeling more relaxed and calm afterwards.

Breath Practice – I teach both group class and one-on-one transformational breath sessions and along with the breath work, we always let out a few screams during each session too. Deep breathing is the quickest and most effective way to access stifled emotions and pain. It opens the channels for you to heal on all levels of body, mind, and spirit and makes way to feelings of euphoria and bliss.

Meditation – Sometimes meditation can feel agonizing for those suffering from depression or anger because our mind and ego gets in the way. With practice, we can learn to de-clutter our minds and release pent up emotions. Combining breath work with meditation is the ideal combination.

Yoga – Yoga is the perfect mix of physical activity and mindfulness. Find a class that resonates with you and one that you enjoy. Like any spiritual practice, yoga will help to uncover blocks, fears, and unresolved emotion that may have been lingering for years.

Karate – Another great physical activity that helps to release anger is Karate. The combination of physical force and mental focus gets you out of your head and into your center, the core of who you are.

Boxing – While I am not a huge advocate of fighting, a healthy boxing practice, even solo with a bag is an awesome way to expel built up emotion along with giving you a great workout.

Dancing – Movement of any kind often helps with anger. Dancing to your favorite music playing loudly in the background may be just the thing you’ve been needing. Lose yourself in the music and dance like nobody is watching. Research a group called Ecstatic Dance in your area or plan a night out with friends.

Remove Yourself – Sometimes we will need to make physical changes such as leaving an abusive relationship with somebody who pisses us off regularly.  Or perhaps seeking out a new job that has a more positive environment may be just the thing you need to do. Know that you are never stuck in a situation and that forward movement is possible. You just need to take the first steps.

*Make sure to speak with your doctor if you’ve been experiencing ongoing feelings of extreme depression, anger, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts.

Laugh Out Loud – It May Improve Your Health

Laugh Out Loud – It May Improve Your Health

Laughter may truly be the best medicine. Life for many of us has gotten so serious and along with that comes less time to laugh, have fun, and enjoy life.

Dr. Norman Cousins who wrote “An Anatomy of an Illness” was one of the first to recognize the power of laughter in our own healing journey. He proved that as little as 10 minutes of laughter per day can impact your health and your life in dramatic ways.

Since that time, laughing has been shown in numerous studies worldwide to lower the stress hormone called cortisol, and to increase endorphins leading to an instant shift into a more positive state of mind. Laughing may also increase cognitive function in seniors and reduce pain as well.

Just as stress can build up in our bodies and eventually lead to potential disease, laughter may offset that. It acts as a stress reliever and natural anti-inflammatory.

Finding time each day to play, laugh, and socialize has become more important than ever in this isolating world of social media. People aren’t connecting as we once did and more and more, loneliness has set in along with less authentic laugh out loud moments.

if you’re feeling too blue to chuckle, force yourself. Even a fake laugh has been shown to lift the mood and transform your mindset. When you’re down in the dumps, try a phony, exaggerated Hollywood laugh and see what happens.

Just like implementing a daily exercise routine, regular family time, and a spiritual practice, make sure to schedule fun outings, group activities, and time to watch humorous videos. Hey, even playing a practical joke on a co-worker could be just the thing to improve your overall health.

Don’t underestimate the power of what cannot be seen. On a deeper level, laughter is literally healing your body and lowering some of the inflammation markers that have been linked to long-term disease.

Lol has a whole new meaning and has gone from being an overused acronym, to a life-improving verb!

Attention Men! Is your Testosterone Low?

Attention Men! Is your Testosterone Low?

If you’re a man in his 30’s, 40’s, 50’s or beyond it is well worth looking into your Testosterone levels. In fact, getting a full hormone panel regularly which includes a series of vital tests such as Testosterone, Estrogen, DHEA, and Thyroid to name a few, is an important tool in your goal of remaining youthful, vibrant, and healthy.

Your doctor won’t normally suggest hormone tests since it is often over and above the usual requirements of an annual physical. Perhaps it’s time to take your health into your own hands and communicate with your physician about your desire to get them checked.

Many guys when presented with the idea of Testosterone replacement have visions of angry, overstuffed bodybuilders when in reality, those images are often due to a higher than normal level of Testosterone mixed with other steroids.

For the everyday man who wants to increase energy, burn fat, build lean muscle, lower the risk of disease, increase cognitive function, and experience a more stable and upbeat mood, Testosterone may be the answer.

I was one of those men. Just a few years ago I found out that my T levels were lower than expected. Despite doing all that I could with exercise, diet, and nutrition, they remained on the low side of normal. I was still fit and lean but I suffered from bouts of depression and often felt unrested in the mornings after a long night’s sleep. I didn’t make the connection until I did more research.

My doctor suggested that I try a low dose of bio-identical Testosterone replacement therapy. Within a very short period of time, I felt an increase in energy, a more restful sleep, and my mood seemed stable and positive. I also noticed that I didn’t need to work out as arduously in order to get the results I once did just years before. For me, Testosterone was a godsend. It was as if I had cleaned the spark plugs of my body increasing the effectiveness and energy of all aspects of my health.

After much research, I truly believe that Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy is the answer for many men who are looking to not only increase their longevity but also to feel better along the way.

Testosterone can be taken via gel or cream, injection, patch, or from a pellet that is placed under the skin. Once you’ve done the initial blood work or saliva panel, an endocrinologist or hormone specialist can go over your best options and whether or not you’re a candidate. Keep in mind that many general practitioners will tell you that “you’re fine for your age” which may not always be the ideal for those looking to be at their optimal.

Some of the numerous benefits of increasing your Testosterone levels are:

  • Increased Physical Energy
  • Better Cognitive Function
  • Deeper and More Restful Sleep
  • Increased Libido
  • Stabilization of Mood and Decreased Depression
  • An Increase in Bone Mineral Density
  • Less Body Fat
  • Increased Lean Muscle
  • Decreased Risk of Certain Diseases

Testosterone replacement is surprisingly affordable and not just for Hollywood’s elite. Men all over the world are beginning to understand that the fountain of youth involves more than just eating well, exercising, and keeping a positive attitude. Sometimes, we need help from outside sources. In this case, a Bio-Identical Hormone that mimics our bodies own production, giving us a more vital and youthful appearance with a renewed zest that we may have thought had long passed us by.

*Always consult with your physician before beginning any hormone-related treatments.

Let’s Go From Selfie to Selfless in 2018!

Let’s Go From Selfie to Selfless in 2018!

We live in the age of selfies and narcissism. Of course, not everybody is self-involved but it seems that a perfect body and beautiful skin gets us attention, followers, and likes on social media and so why wouldn’t we have the wrong idea?  After all, being self-focused sells!

The problem lies when people begin putting more emphasis on their physical self rather than on the more vital mission of serving and helping others.

I’ll be the first to admit that my body shots on Instagram get FAR more likes than the healthy food and organic strawberry pics, or the inspirational quotes. And if I hadn’t been around the block a few times, I would actually believe that these likes make me important or desired in some way.

The truth is that while admirers are appreciated, we all need to think more deeply about the important underlying message of why we are here. Using your fit body, good looks, or perfect smile to get attention is cool but what are you doing with that audience once you have them?

We are now in a time where authenticity, vulnerability and being of service IS the ONLY way! People are suffering like never before. The depression rate is rising, suicides are up, and numerous people are feeling lost, hopeless, and lacking direction. We can make a difference! We can begin sharing our stories with those around us, talking about our own personal struggles with honesty and heart without the need to appear perfect to the outside world.

By doing this, we not only break down our own walls, but we also let more people in. We communicate on a whole new level when we become raw, relatable, and real.

We’re moving beyond the times of hiding out online and presenting an image of air-brushed flawlessness. Instead we need to dig deep and ask the BIG questions. Why am I here? What can I do to help others? How can my challenges be turned into opportunities to serve? What unique gifts do I have to share with the world?

I’m not saying that we should ditch our regimented diet and fitness routine, laser treatments, or whitening toothpaste, and there is nothing wrong with using your physical qualities to garner accolades and attention, but this year, let’s go deeper than ever before. Let’s use our gifts and talents and appearance wisely and with love.

Something to ask yourself often is “how can I leave this world a better place because I lived?” Once you get the answers, get busy making it happen! After all, none of us know for sure how long we will be here and just imagine what an amazing world it would be if we each did just that. This year, let’s go from selfie to selfless and see what happens.

Spirulina – Nature’s Perfect Food?

Spirulina – Nature’s Perfect Food?

We’ve all heard of Spirulina but few of us know about the unbelievable benefits that it can have on our health. What most people might describe as fishy, slimy, or just plain awful, may hold nature’s secrets to anti-aging and longevity.

Spirulina is one of the oldest life forms on our planet. It is classified as a blue green algae that grows mostly in salt water lakes and oceans but also in fresh water too. It is jam packed with vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and vegan protein. In fact, Spirulina contains more protein than meat, chicken, fish, and soybeans. It is extremely high in the antioxidant Beta Carotene, and is rich in amino acids, iron, Vitamins A, E, and B, and heart-healthy fatty acids.

Many health experts recommend Spirulina for it’s amazing ability to detox the blood of heavy metals, toxins, and even radiation exposure. Vegans are also super fans of this superfood because it really is the perfect plant-based food.

The latest buzz about Spirulina is that it has a positive effect on the thyroid gland which balances our metabolism along with a myriad of other bodily functions. This is mostly because Spirulina is very high in Iodine which has been shown to strongly support proper thyroid function.

Some of the additional benefits that people experience from taking Spirulina is a strengthened immune system, increased energy, better cognitive function and alertness, and it has been shown to support eye, brain, and cardiovascular health.

Even if you aren’t a vegan or vegetarian, the benefits of taking Spirulina daily are immeasurable. Look for an organic, raw capsule or powder and consume it daily. Approximately 2000-3000 mg per day is a good place to begin and you can eventually supplement up to 10,000 mg per day. The powder can be added to smoothies or juice if desired.

Nature really does know best and I for one am so happy that it produced this perfect food which can not only slow our aging process but also give us increased zest and vigor along the way!

No More Resolution Let-Downs!

No More Resolution Let-Downs!

Every one of us has made new year’s resolutions at some point in our lives. Many of us have kept them but all too often, let’s face it, they’re left behind somewhere by February or March because we’re too busy and have lost the incentive to follow through.

But what’s really going on below the surface is that our subconscious mind is sabotaging our success. Whether we want to lose 10 pounds, earn more money, spend less, or meet the mate of our dreams, what we desire in our conscious minds means very little if our subconscious is running the show.

We get messages early on in our lives about important topics such as money, love, and sex for example. We’re taught by our parents and other influential adults how to navigate these areas of our life. We learn by example and what we see and hear sets up these beliefs at an early age. It ends up that no matter what we want on the outside as grown-ups, these often-limiting attitudes take over causing continual broken dreams and disappointments.

So, how can we stop this from happening once and for all? How can we finally keep our resolutions instead of hitting the wall yet again and feeling the ongoing sense of failure and frustration?

Get to the Bottom of it – For each resolution, make a list of the top 5 negative thoughts that come to mind. For example, if you’d like to earn and save more money, journal about your feelings on the topic such as “if I make additional income, I’ll have to work harder and never see my friends” or “if I budget, then I’ll constantly be stressed and anxious and not enjoy my life.” Whatever comes up, it is time to get it out and into the open for healing. Write down the contradictory feelings on each topic that are getting in the way.

Seek Help – Once you’ve uncovered your subconscious beliefs that are blocking your forward movement, seek an expert who can help. Find a therapist, hypnotist, healer, or coach who can help you move through these old, unhealthy patterns in order to let them go once and for all. Change is possible! Make this the year that you finally break free.

Make a Plan – If you set goals for the new year then you must also make a plan. Nothing will get accomplished if you just wish for it. It doesn’t need to be an overwhelming process but you must work backwards from your long-term goal or resolution, breaking it up into smaller and more achievable steps. Start with the outcome you’d like in one year and then create actions for the month, week, and each day in order to succeed.

Be Accountable – Make sure to check in regularly. How far are you coming along with your goals? Find somebody who you can be accountable to, perhaps an accountability partner who is also looking to keep their resolutions. Set up regular weekly or monthly meetings and do it as a team. If you’ve bitten off more than you can chew, go back and re-evaluate and perhaps set more attainable steps for you to take.

Celebrate Your Wins – Take time to celebrate your accomplishments! Too many times we sail through our successes without truly acknowledging and appreciating them. When we have big goals it’s easy to overlook the small wins along the way. Give thanks, soak in the gratitude, and be more present to enjoy even the smallest of victories.
