Are You Having A Midlife Un-Crisis?

Are You Having A Midlife Un-Crisis?

I am nearing 50 in a matter of months, the time when many people go through a midlife crisis.  Depending upon how long we live, it may occur earlier or later, and for many, we have numerous so-called crisis in our life.

A crisis would be defined as “a time of intense difficulty, trouble, or danger” or “a time when a difficult or important decision must be made.”

I have definitely experienced some major shifts over the past couple of years and much of what I placed importance on no longer has meaning. It has left me questioning everything that I had been working towards in the past. The term crisis may be a bit dramatic, but I for one, most definitely feel an important and life-affirming shift.

If you see things like I do, then you realize that life as we know it, involves constant expansion and growth and the very reason we are here, is to evolve as spiritual beings having this human experience. Therefore, we begin to understand that there is no such thing as crisis. Instead, I now make a declaration for everybody out there who is feeling the effects of such a challenging chapter in their own life, to rename it “Midlife Un-Crisis!”

What are the signs that we may be in such an “Un-Crisis?”

  • Lack of clarity, motivation, or passion for life
  • Feelings of powerlessness or depression
  • Questioning where you want to go from here
  • Wondering why you feel unhappy, stuck, or complacent
  • Recognizing negative, habitual ways of being but not knowing how to move through them
  • Noticing what once made you happy in the past i.e. shopping, eating, sex, or addictive behaviors no longer fulfill you
  • Discovering that what once worked to get you ahead, no longer does
  • You choose happiness over success, money, or accolades

Here is the good news! This doesn’t mean that life is over or that you should give up. It is just the opposite. It’s reflecting back to you, that THE BEST TIMES are yet to come and that all you need to do is make space. This is a time when you don’t need outside stimulus to make you feel alive, when you can actually accomplish more with less striving, and a time when you can allow more joy, fulfillment, and ease into your experience without being so attached to outcome.

It’s the perfect time to Un-Do, Un-Wind, and Un-Tether all those things that no longer serve you. A time to let go of the parts of yourself that you’ve outgrown and moved beyond. Laying just around the corner is something far more valuable and authentic.

It’s okay to question your direction. It is fine to wonder where the heck you’re going and why you’re here. But when we can begin seeing this as a strength and not a weakness, that is where our true power lies.

There may be a midlife questioning about your career or the marriage that you committed to but if you can just love yourself through all of it and learn to be gentle, forgiving, and accepting towards all that is, and stop making yourself wrong for these feelings, then you will soon realize that we really have nothing to fear.

Yes, the inevitable is coming, we are going to die at some point. Many of us fear that more than anything else. Sometimes these painful spots we find ourselves in are derived from that deep-rooted truth we want to avoid, especially as we reach mid-life.

If you can dig deep, do the emotional and spiritual work necessary to get you through to the other side, you’ll begin to see that these times of crisis really are our best teachers and that nothing lasts forever. If we can be patient and loving all while committed to moving through whatever we are dealing with, we will realize that we are having a Midlife Un-Crisis because more is being asked of us, because we are meant to be channels of light for others and because our life is calling for us to become beacons of inspiration, and love.

Don’t give up. Stick with it and begin to unravel why you’re feeling paralyzed, apathetic, or blue. Look for clues. Allow clarity with the help of healers, books, retreats, videos, and a spiritual practice, and you will begin to see that brighter days and a new chapter worth living are just around the corner. If you’re approaching mid-life like I am, the second half really can be your happiest, most fulfilling, and rewarding if you can just ride the wave and have faith.

Healthy Air Travel

Healthy Air Travel

Traveling by plane just isn’t as much fun as it used to be. The airports are packed, line-ups are long, and the whole experience is a bit tedious and nerve-wracking.

Add onto that the stress on the body from sitting in an enclosed metal compartment at high altitude for hours. During this time we are often exposed to germs and we experience a lack of fresh air, and poor circulation due to air pressure. All of this and we have the possibility for looming illness. In fact, it is not uncommon for those who fly to get a sinus infection, cold, or flu soon after their flight.

The good news is that there are ways to lessen the negative effects of flying on your health. Here is a list of things that you can do to prepare for your next flight and reduce your risk of getting sick:

  • Oil of Oregano – Make sure to bring a small bottle of Oil of Oregano in your carry on and take 3-5 drops under your tongue followed by water at least once or twice during your flight. Oregano is a powerful germ fighter and will boost your immunity and resistance during your air travel.
  • Get Some Zzz’s – Not everyone can sleep during a flight but getting some well-deserved nap time during your trip will help to boost immunity and will offset some of the stress of the events leading up to your flight. For longer and oversea flights, try a melatonin spray or supplement to induce a deeper sleep and to assist with jet lag.
  • Meditate – Flights are an awesome place to meditate. Use a headset, put on soothing music, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. You can also use this time to visualize some of your goals and dreams spending time “living as if” those events have already come to fruition. A positive mindset and relaxation has been proven to boost your immunity, lower stress levels, and bring an overall sense of wellbeing.
  • Drink Water – Another important way to rinse toxins and germs from your system is to drink a lot of water during your flight. Most people tend to get dehydrated during their travels so it’s important to drink extra liquid even when you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Vitamin C & Zinc – Don’t forget to bring along chewable or powdered vitamin C along with Zinc lozenges to suck during the flight. Fueling your body with high vitamin and mineral content can help your cells to fight off possible invasion by lurking bugs.
  • Take Regular Stretch Breaks – Even though the person next to you may not approve, it is a good idea to get out of your seat to stretch and move your legs frequently during a long flight. This helps you to avoid circulation issues and the potential for blood clots. Regular movement will also help you to feel more awake and alert once the flight is over.

Natural Energy Boosters!

Natural Energy Boosters!

As a wellness coach, the number one reason people come to me is for weight loss. The second reason is because they are tired and desperately want to feel better!

While there can be a number of reasons why people have low energy from depression, a difficult life event, or a poor diet and lifestyle choices, there are some effective ways to overcome fatigue using natural herbs and supplements.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? In this case, are you tired because of a lack of exercise and bad dietary habits, or is the low energy causing you to workout less and eat things that you know aren’t good for you?

Whichever it is, here are some terrific energy boosters that you can incorporate today to get you over the hump and kick-start your system. It’s time to start living the life you truly want to live; a life that incorporates regular exercise, healthy eating, steady energy, mental and spiritual balance, and a deep and restful sleep at night so that you can do it all over again the next day.

Ginseng – Ginseng is probably the best-known herbal remedy for energy and chi. There are many versions from white American to Korean Ginseng, but all forms offer a steady energy without the crash afterwards. My favorite is a liquid white American Ginseng that I take with water.

Ashwaganda – Often stress can cause mental and physical fatigue. Sometimes our adrenal glands, which pump out adrenalin, can be overtaxed and less efficient. Ashwaganda is an amazing herb that helps to lower overall stress in the body, support our adrenals, and increase physical stamina and libido. It is most commonly taken as a supplement or in powder form that can be added to smoothies.

Yerba Mate – This coffee alternative contains naturally occurring caffeine, which gives the body a boost of energy without the acidity of coffee. Yerba Mate is a mild herb that can be taken as a tea.

Maca – Maca root is a part of the Ginseng family and works similarly to Ashwaganda. It helps to increase energy and libido and works on lowering stress in the body along with promoting a deeper and more restful sleep at night. Maca can be found as a coffee alternative, supplement, and powder form for smoothies.

Moringa – The Moringa leaf is often ground up into a powder and used to increase stamina, lower blood sugar, and reduce overall inflammation in the body. This superfood is becoming more and more popular as a true energy booster and anti-aging remedy.

Rhodiola – Rhodiola Rosea root helps to balance hormones within the body and increases our energy naturally. It also has stress-lowering effects and libido-boosting properties and may help with depression too. Rhodiola is most commonly taken as a supplement.

Green Tea – Along with having powerful immune-supporting properties, Green Tea has thermogenic effects and stimulates the fat burning process within the body. The naturally occurring caffeine also makes it ideal as a pre-workout drink or as an afternoon pick-me-up. Often 1 mega Green Tea capsule equals 7 cups of Green Tea making it an easier option for many people.

Chlorella – This green, superfood algae contains an abundance of chlorophyll, which provides oxygen to our cells. Because of this, supplementing with Chlorella increases physical energy and vitality often creating more mental clarity too.

Spirulina – Also high in chlorophyll, Spirulina is contains loads of protein, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids and works on oxygenating our system helping us to feel more vital and energized often immediately after supplementation.

Beets – Beets supply nitrates, which convert into nitric oxide in our body helping to promote better blood flow. This increased flow adds a boost of energy and opens our vessels along with lowering blood pressure. Because of this, Beets are becoming very popular in pre-workout products.

Bee Pollen – Often called nature’s perfect food because of it’s ample supply of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, Bee Pollen also stimulates energy naturally while boosting our immunity and helping to offset illness.

Water – The most common reason for fatigue is dehydration. Most of the time we don’t realize that we’re dehydrated but often one glass of water can improve our energy dramatically. Always drink pure, filtered water.

*Always consult with your physician before taking any herbal supplements.

Pain Stories

Pain Stories

For years I told a story of illness, depression, and suffering. It wasn’t entirely my fault since my chronic sickness began when I was a child so it was all that I knew at the time. My story involved asthma, earaches, allergies, and just a general malaise about life. I was often drugged with cough medicine and antibiotics so that I could heal what was ailing me but ironically, it was doing more harm than good. My pain story also involved being bullied and taunted from as far back as I can remember. Not the best story to tell but it was the only one that I knew at the time.

We all have stories to tell. Some of us love to get into the nitty gritty detail of how hard life has been for us. Others tell a lighter, more empowering tale. Our ability to develop and hash out the storyline comes from years of planning, experiencing, and developing the various characters and dramas along the way.

If we want a different life experience, we MUST tell a different story! Most likely, that plotline we’ve been reciting since youth no longer serves us. In fact, by telling the same story over and over again, we are perpetuating duplicative experiences and challenges that we have already lived out. Maybe it’s time to tell a new story.

Sometimes we begin slowly. For me, I started to realize early on that my story of illness was no longer serving me and that I deserved to feel better. I began to research, experiment with my body, and find experts who could help me along the journey towards healing.

While all of this was vital to my growth, the very first step was to become conscious of the story that I was telling and then slowly, make changes to my script.

Initially, it was very difficult because it’s much easier to fall into old habits, patterns and ways of being. Sometimes it’s actually more comforting to suffer than to thrive I learned.

But as we begin to catch our thoughts, ask ourselves if those very thoughts are serving us, and then replace them with more positive and loving thoughts, we gradually begin to shift and we start to re-write the storyline of our life. We begin to get vocal about our new and improved health, the wonderful opportunities that are coming our way, and all that we have to be grateful for. We start to verbalize all that we want to become even before it shows up in physical form because we now realize that in order to achieve all that we desire, we must believe it before we see it.

I understand that it can be fun to complain to friends and tell a story that makes us look and feel like a victim. Somehow there is comfort in sharing our pain with others. But perhaps it’s time to tell a completely different story, one of openness, positivity, and fulfillment. We are in charge of the words that go down on paper, nobody else. Who would you be if you began reinventing yourself and thriving? What would your life look and feel like if you were to become the person that you most admire? Maybe, just maybe it’s time to tell a different story.

Oil of Oregano – Nature’s Miracle Herb

Oil of Oregano – Nature’s Miracle Herb

I have been touting the power of Oregano for 20 years. A lovely woman who sat next to me at a seminar first introduced me to it. She could clearly see that I was suffering from a bad cold and suggested that I try Oil of Oregano. She went on to say that it had really changed her life.

Being the curious and open-minded health seeker that I am, and certainly not one to pass up on a synchronistic meeting, I picked some up on my lunch break. As per the directions, I used 3-5 drops under my tongue followed by some water. At first, I was slightly stunned by the powerful and pungent burn that this product brought on but I also noticed an immediate opening of my lungs, and a clearing of my sinuses.

I still look to that day and that woman as a true gift from the Universe. After all, I had suffered from allergies, earaches, asthma, and bronchitis frequently from childhood into my 30s and I figured that was just the “thing” that I would have to deal with for the rest of my life.

Prior to learning about Oregano Oil, I would struggle at least once per year with a chronic chest infection that were often very difficult to rid my body of. After Oil of Oregano, I have experienced only 3-4 bouts of upper respiratory infections in 20 years! And they were nowhere near as severe as they were prior to using this miracle herb. Sure I have also had some minor colds along the way but they were short lived in duration and less intense then before. Have I changed other things in my diet and lifestyle? Absolutely. But I can honestly say that without a doubt, the number one factor to my improved immunity is the regular use of Oil of Oregano.

Oregano Oil normally consists of pure, wild Oregano along with an oil carrier such as olive oil. Because of it’s high anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-microbial properties, this mixture can also be use topically to fight off skin rashes and cold sores, and helps to alleviate everything from toothaches to sore muscles.

If you find yourself getting sick after taking a flight which many people do, bring a small bottle with you in your carry on bag on future trips. Airplanes are known to be full of airborne germs, and Oil of Oregano will help to boost your immunity, and ward off some of these bugs during a long flight. You may also mix 5-10 drops in your juice or water and drink it throughout the day.

As a general guide, to combat illness, begin using your oil twice daily for a number of days at the first signs of a possible infection such as a scratchy throat, stuffy sinuses, or cough. If you’re already suffering from a cold, or flu, use 5-10 drops under your tongue followed by water 2-3 times per day until your symptoms dissipate.

You may not always avoid illness completely nor would you want to, as it can be a way for our body to cleanse and detox naturally. But I am confident that you will reduce the intensity and duration of a future illness with nature’s miracle, Oil of Oregano!

*Oil of Oregano shouldn’t be used by pregnant women and as always, consult your physician before taking any supplements or herbs.
