Fall Foods to Promote Better Health

Most of us enjoy the festivities of the autumn season. It’s a reminder of the upcoming holidays, family celebrations, and comfort foods. Even though Los Angeles remains warm, hints of crispness begin to fill the air.

I am a big believer in eating seasonally whenever possible meaning that we consume foods which are grown in the particular season of year that we are in.

This fall, why not try some of nature’s amazing autumnal superfoods which are packed with vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and other health-promoting gifts.

Pumpkin – Pumpkins are packed with Vitamin A from Beta Carotene which helps to promote better vision. Pumpkin seeds are high in tryptophan which support healthy serotonin levels and assist in balancing our mood and sleep. Pumpkin seeds or pumpkin seed oil have been shown to strengthen the prostate and may lower the risk of prostate cancer.

Squash – There are so many varieties of squash and all have enormous health benefits. They are one of the oldest groups of vegetables on earth and they help to boost overall immunity, reduce inflammation, improve vision and blood circulation, and regulate blood sugar. They also improve lung function and have antifungal properties.

Zucchini – Zucchini is high in B Vitamins which improves overall energy. It may also help to control Diabetes, and improve digestion along with being high in antioxidants including Vitamins A and C, and Super Oxide Dismutase. Zucchini also helps to support proper thyroid and adrenal function.

Brussel Sprout – This cruciferous superfood is more popular than ever and for very good reason. They are excellent sources of Vitamin C and Vitamin K. They assist your body in detoxing because of the sulfur-containing compounds and they may lower your risk of cancer and estrogen levels because of their high levels of indole-3-carbinol.

Cauliflower – Another vegetable from the cruciferous family, it is particularly potent at fighting prostate cancer when combined with turmeric. It is also very high in antioxidant vitamins and minerals.

Pomegranate – This beautiful fruit is high in a unique antioxidant called punicalagin. Research indicates it may be effective in reducing the risk of heart disease due to aggressive free radical-scavenging activities in the body. The high polyphenol level in pomegranate has also been linked to a reduction in cancer cell activity.

Apple –  Apples are high in vitamins and minerals along with both soluble and insoluble fiber. The fiber content is effective at slowing or preventing the absorption of bad cholesterol into the arteries along with assisting proper elimination and detox. An apple a day really does keep the doctor away provided it’s organic since apples are one of the most highly pesticide sprayed fruit on earth.

Celery – Celery contains luteolin a nutrient which may slow memory loss and inflammation in our brain. It is also low in calories and high in vitamin and mineral content. It has been linked with an ability to slow cancer cell growth, especially in breast tissue for women on synthetic hormones.

Carrot – Carrots are extremely high in Beta Carotene which converts to Vitamin A in our liver and is known to support proper eye health. The minerals in carrots work to promote strong bones and a healthy nervous system along with maintaining healthy and young skin, hair, and teeth.

Beet –Beets contain nitric oxide which help to open blood vessels providing the body with more energy and feeding the cells with extra oxygen. Beet juice extract is wonderful as a pre-workout for this reason. Beets also assist the body in proper liver detox.

Cranberries – The juice of cranberries are most known for their positive effects on the kidneys and the urinary tract also in aiding urinary tract infections. They also have powerful immune-boosting properties and work to fight most types of cancer cells.

Turnip – Turnip greens are even more vitamin enriched than the root although both have amazing healing benefits. The sulfur-containing compounds have powerful anti-cancer effects along with a great deal of antioxidants and minerals.

Sweet Potato – Like other orange fruits and vegetables, sweet potato contains high levels of the powerhouse antioxidant Beta Carotene. Sweet potatoes have less calories per serving than white potatoes and a lower glycemic index rating too. This high fiber vegetable is especially great as a pre-workout food.

Whenever possible, buy organic produce in order to avoid toxins and chemicals. Experiment over the next few months and try some new recipes. You may just discover a new-found love for the most exciting fruits and vegetables of the year.

The Future on Aging Has Never Looked So Bright!

This week I was asked to participate in an online panel for a youthful aging summit that took place in Paris. The company running the event was gathering marketing strategies for a health company who is putting out a new product dealing with cellular regeneration.

As somebody who is passionate about aging youthfully and committed to the fact that aging does not have to equal decline, I jumped on board!

Are we all going to die? Yes. Do we have to suffer, fall apart, and lose our amazing and minds along the way? No. In fact, many experts on aging believe that we can live well over 120 years old and do so healthfully. The problem lies in many of our day-to-day choices that are largely within our control. In fact, it is believed that our longevity is mainly based upon lifestyle choices.

Eating an organic and non-GMO diet, exercise, stress reduction, and spiritual and emotional health account for up to 75% of our overall longevity with genetics playing approximately 25%. This is exciting news for those of us who are passionate about taking charge and improving our odds.

What does the future on aging hold? What breakthroughs are ahead? Here are just a few of the most exciting topics being researched:

Telomeres – The caps on our DNA strands are known as telomeres. As we age, they get shorter and shorter until they disappear leaving our cells and DNA unprotected to eventually die. Antioxidant supplements, exercise, yoga, and meditation are just a few lifestyle changes that have been shown to lengthen our telomeres. We can affect the longevity of our cells by choosing vitamin-packed foods and supplements along with daily exercise.

Non-Invasive Procedures – If we decide to look more youthful on the journey, we are also in luck. We don’t need to age like our grandparents thanks to the latest in cosmetic procedures such as Botox and Hyaluronic facial fillers. There are also more lasers on the market than ever before that effectively tone and tighten the skin along with radio frequency and ultrasound technology to help us turn back the clock.

Hormones – Hormones are the spark plugs for our body. As we age and due to the chemicals and toxins in both our personal care products and foods, many people experience hormone imbalances. We are seeing an increase in estrogen in both men and women and a decrease in testosterone to name just a few. Thyroid issues are also more common than ever. Anti-aging clinics are popping up everywhere offering age management solutions. When we can take natural and bio-identical hormones to balance our key hormones, we are able to turn back the clock on aging and look and feel better! These changes can be felt very quickly.

Superfoods – We are now realizing more than ever, the power of nature. We’re going back to basics. Foods like mushrooms, spirulina, chlorella, aloe vera, dandelion, berries, and cruciferous vegetables may hold the secret to longevity and vitality into our later years. By consuming concentrated forms of these superfoods, we are literally flooding our cells with goodness often offsetting the toxins, chemicals, and free radicals that can attack our cells. Consuming less animal products in general and more plant-based foods is not just a trend, it is a way of life that will improve our odds.

Kayakalpa – Kayakalpa yoga is said to help people to live longer and become stronger and healthier. The word Kayakalpa means immortalizing the body. Yoga in general has been linked to the lowering of disease and increasing of chi or life force. Many people who practice yoga regularly have felt improvements in many bodily systems and functions like boosting memory, reproductive issues, increasing immunity, and a reduction of reliance on certain medications, including those of chronic diseases like diabetes, asthma and blood pressure.

It is becoming more clear that what we do day-to-day and the choices we make in regards to our emotional, spiritual, and physical health will in fact, impact the course of our life.

We live in exciting times! If you are interested in improving your health and wellness and of increasing your odds of living longer, there are numerous breakthroughs that are proving to be quite inspirational. The future continues to look very bright indeed.

As a youthful aging and wellness coach, I for one, am very optimistic about what the future on aging holds for all of us. There has never been a better time to be alive.

Spice Up Your Health Life!

Spices, herbs, and natural flavoring may not just enhance our taste buds. Recent studies are showing that spicing up your mealtime may in fact lower your risk of certain diseases and may also help to reduce inflammation in your body.

Often nature has many of the answers that we’ve been searching for and herbs and spices are a great example of this.

Here is a small list of my favorite spices and how they’ve been shown to enhance your overall health:

Black Pepper – Black pepper is rich in piperine which has been shown to slow, reduce or even kill certain types of cancer cells relating to breast, prostate, colon, lung, liver, stomach, and cervix. Piperine has also exhibited anti-inflammatory effects and may help reduce the pain relating to Arthritis and gout.

Turmeric – This bright orange spice has been used in Ayurvedic traditions for thousands of years. It has shown great promise in lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s, certain cancers, and even heart disease. The active ingredient curcumin is a powerful anti-inflammatory and is often recommended by doctors to help fight the symptoms or Arthritis and sports injuries.

Oregano – Oregano has potent anti-microbial properties and is incredibly effective during cold and flu season. Using oil of oregano drops under the tongue along with fresh oregano in your cooking has been shown to boost immunity and ward off certain infections.

Pink Himalayan Sea Salt – Salt has had a bad rap. For those with high blood pressure, it is wise to minimize sodium intake but tests have shown that pink Himalayan sea salt contains 80 + trace minerals and may help to alkalize the body.

Basil – Fragrant basil is packed with Vitamin K which helps our bodies to better absorb Vitamin D3. Vitamin K also promotes proper blood clotting, and supports our bones. Basil may also offer DNA protection and has antibacterial properties to help fight off infections.

Sage – According to the Journal of Psychopharmacology, sage has been shown to benefit people’s memory. Sage supplements have also been studied for their power to reduce anxiety symptoms.

Garlic – Garlic contains the sulphur compound called allicin which has numerous health benefits. Garlic is known to reduce bad cholesterol, lower blood pressure, inhibit the common cold and flu, and may even fight cancerous cells.

Rosemary – Rosemary also has anti-inflammatory effects and supports healthy eye health. Rosemary also positively affects the brain and may even lower the risk of certain cancers including breast and blood.

Curry – Various colors of curry are often used in Thai and Indian cuisine. Curry has long been researched to reduce inflammation in the body, and to fight harmful free radicals from attacking our cells. Curry may also support proper liver health and detoxification.

Ginger – Ginger tea has been used as a remedy for digestive issues, nausea, and motion sickness for thousands of years. It also has immune-boosting properties, and has been shown to reduce overall inflammation in the body.

Cinnamon – Cinnamon has antifungal and antibacterial properties and has been researched for its benefits in lowering blood sugar in the body. It has anti-inflammatory effects and is considered a superfood because of its high antioxidant content.

There are numerous studies worldwide that show the positive health benefits of herbs and spices.

This week why not experiment with your cooking? The next time you’re at the supermarket look for fresh, organic herbs and try something new. Not only will your taste buds thank you but you’ll definitely be doing your health and your body some good!
